About Us

St. Joseph Hospital Nkwanta is a one hundred and ten (110) bed capacity facility in the Oti region of Ghana. It currently has a staff capacity of 260.It was established in 1971 as a Clinic by the then Catholic Bishop of Ho-Keta Diocese Bishop Koenings. Its initial buildings buildings were financed by the dutch government and equipped by Memisa Medicus Mundi of Holland.Two Dutch nurses Sr. Youb and Sr. Corey together with health assistants from the local community began the pioneering work of rendering health services to the local people.OLA Sisters Rev Sr. Mariam Hankard and Rev. Sr. Salve Oreilly were posted and were welcomed by the Parish Priest of Nkwanta Rev. Fr. John Mensink and Rev Fr. Jos Pijpers to manage and provide various healthcare services to the people of Nkwanta and its environs in the Oti enclave in the then Volta Region.Being the first health facility in the area, they engaged in more community outreaches as a result of the bad nature of road networks deterring people from accessing healthcare.Some indigenes of the area were also engaged and trained to assist in the healthcare delivery and prominent among them were Mr. John Obimpe, Sussana Bale, Attah Felicia etc.The Clinic was upgraded and it attained a hospital status in the year 2000.Over the years various OLA Sisters have been posted to the facility to offer various services and the facility has undergone transformation through their efforts, benevolence and hard work.Below is a list of some of the Rev. Sr. Rose Sumah who happens to be the first Ghanaian sister to join the community and later managed the facility from 2002 – 2009.Sr. Lucy Dumenu took over in 2009 as the Sr. In-Charge and also contributed massively to the infrastruture development of the hospital until 2015.Sr. Georgina Quayson took charge from 2015 to 2022 current Sr. Anastasia Acheama Okyere is the Sr. In-Charge and the Health Services Administrator of the Hospital.The Hospital also has Pre-School which takes care of wards of Staff of the Hospital and the entire community. The Hospital is currently under the watch of Bishop Akwasi Ababio Mante,The Catholic Bishop of Jasikan Diocese.
